Here we are in the 9,8000 of the stay in place order, I don't know about you but we are reading so much. I am not complaining at all and love that my love of reading truly is also something that we love as a family, that I am now seeing the boys read and devour books.
Every Wednesday I am going to try to put a book I am reading, want to read or the boys are reading up so that you might get some great ideas of what to read next! In the very near future, I will read a book for kids to enjoy and upload it here and on our YouTube channel. I just thought it would be a fun thing to do! I will try and get some writers or book stores to share a Q&A session to share with you. Maybe even get some of them to do a reading of their book! So here is a list of my top ten books I love to read to the boys over and over!
"Nibbles The Book Monster." By Emma Yarlett
This is the book that made me sign up to sell Usborne books! It is so cute and so funny, The boys just love this book!! Nibbles is a small monster who nibbles his way through lots of storybooks (e.g. Little Red Riding Hood, Goldilocks, and the Three Bears, etc.) accidentally changing the stories as he goes.
“The Little House” by Virginia Lee Burton
A sweet little pink house is the star of this book. I love reading the part where she is found and rescued by descendants of her original family. The boys are such big fans of all of Virginia Lee Burton and it was hard to choose a favorite. I was introduced to this book when the boys were in preschool. At the Co-op during reading circle. I feel in love with it so it has a very soft spot in my heart.
"The Box Car Kids" by Gertrude Chandler Warner. I started reading these to the boys when we first went on lockdown. At first they were bored and now we are on book four and in the evenings we love to snuggle up and read them! There are 150 books in the series, It tells a story of 4 orphaned kids that find a boxcar and move in and live there taking care of each other. Then they find their long lost grandfather. A school teacher created them and published them in 1924. It is cool that kids these days can still relate.
The rhythm and rhyming in this story are just fabulous. My boys really enjoy chiming in and reading! Even better news? There are more books in the series! “Bear Stays Up for Christmas” would make a great Christmas gift ( we do the 25 books of Christmas every year and read a book each night that is holiday/winter themed. This one even now at 8 was a great read this past Christmas.
This is on our to-read list. F told me well I love the movie and you are always telling me the books are always so much better than the movie. It is about a very mischievous boy who can fly and never grows up, Peter Pan spends his never-ending childhood adventuring on the small island of Neverland as the leader of his gang, the Lost Boys, interacting with mermaids, Native Americans, fairies, pirates, and occasionally with three ordinary children their dog who are from the world outside of Neverland.
I love to read this to the boys during fall time, it just puts me in the mood for pumpkin spice everything and cuddling together to settle in to read this About a sweet spider Charlotte who spins a web with words, h barn. Charlotte’s spider web in a barn on a farm. Charlotte tells of her feelings for a little pig named Wilbur, who simply wants a friend. They also express the love of a girl named Fern, who saved Wilbur’s life when he was born the runt of his litter.
I was sick a lot growing up. Every time I need comfort my mom would play Mary Poppins, I love everything about the book and the movie! I adore the second movie with Emily Blunt. In the book, Mary Poppins arrives at Number Seventeen Cherry-Tree Lane, ( Please take me here!) life is flipped upside down at the Banks house is forever, changed. It all starts when in from the east Mary Poppins is blown in to the home of the Banks family. She becomes a most unusual nanny in every way to Jane, Michael, and not shown in either movie to the twins. Who else but Mary Poppins can slide up banisters, pull an entire lamp out of an empty carpetbag, and make a dose of medicine taste like delicious lime-juice cordial? A day with Mary Poppins is a day of magic and make-believe come to life In the most delightful way!
Oh the memories of Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle! This was the 1st book I can remember being read to by the Teach in 1st grade. I loved this book and it makes me feel very melancholy. Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle lives in an upside-down house with a kitchen that is always full of freshly baked cookies. She was even married to a pirate once! Best of all, she knows everything there is to know about children. This is just a delightful series. Betty also wrote another book that I have adored for such a long time and that is the Egg and I. It is based on a farm that was really a farm in Bever Valley, Washington, and the tales of a city girl living in the country. My Mom and I have spent many Sunday drives looking for the barn.
I got this book for the boys for their 4th birthday because they just love their Grandma (There is a how-to babysit grandpa book as well.) A young girl heads over to her grandma's house for a sleepover babysitting session-with the child providing clear and humorous instructions to readers on how to care for a grandma. The to-do list contains many choices for grandma
This book is so sweet and sad, it is a great book to read to your kids. It really helps them know that people that don't look just like everyone have feelings, and if you sto and really get to know people for who they really are not what they look like. Wonder tells the story of a young boy with a facial deformity who learns to live and accept who he is after going to a local school and gets treated so poorly by his peers. It really pulls at your heart. A great book for both boys and girls.
